Case Summary

On May 18, 2023, a group of Louisiana voters filed a federal lawsuit against the Parish of DeSoto, Louisiana, and the DeSoto Parish Policy Jury challenging the Parish’s enacted Police Jury redistricting plan as an unconstitutional racial gerrymander. They sought a declaratory judgment the plan was unconstitutional, a preliminary and permanent injunction barring the plan from use in future elections, an order requiring the Parish to enact a constitutional plan by a specified deadline, and for the court to appoint a special master to draw a remedial plan if necessary.

  • The parties failed to settle the case after months of negotiations. A scheduling conference is pending.
