CASE SUMMARY

On April 25, 2022, a group of Mississippi voters filed a federal lawsuit against Mississippi’s Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State, and State Board of Election Commissioners challenging the Mississippi Supreme Court’s redistricting plan as unconstitutionally racially discriminatory and as diluting Black voters’ voting strength in violation of Section of 2 of the federal Voting Rights Act (“VRA”). They sought a judicial declaration that the plan is unconstitutional and unlawful, a preliminary and permanent injunction barring the plan from use in future elections, and an order requiring the State to enact a new, lawful plan or for the Court to do so if the State fails to do so.
